That Thread on Your Sweater? Let Me Give it a Yank, Mr. Rove...

Oh my...let the great unraveling begin. Speculation on blogs like this one for months, more than a year actually, has been that he who outed CIA Operative Valerie Plame was none other than the rather insane-looking brain-behind-the-cowboy, Karl Rove. As you've heard by now, it's moved from speculation to fact that Rove communicated with Time magazine reporter Matt Cooper, specifically mentioning "Joseph Wilson's wife" in that interchange.

This revelation came about through an investigation authored by Clinton attack dog and Newsweek magazine investigative reporter Michael Isikoff. By Clinton attack dog, I'm meaning that Isikoff went for the Clinton throat with several Drudge-styled revelations back in the early days of the Lewinsky scandal. If you haven't arrived at this conclusion thus far, let me help you out: this guy hardly lives to serve Democrats. He was one of their worst nightmares.

But back to our sordid tale...the suspicious amongst might be easily convinced that that gun over there is still smoking. I mean, is it happenstance that Rove was pointing reporters to Wilson's wife, and then shortly thereafter rightwingnut columnist Robert Novak spilled the beans about Valerie Plame?

When the Plame story came out, anyone with even half an objective bone in their bodies was saying uncomfortably... "Uh...is that right? Is that a decent thing to do? Is that...legal??" We don't know the answer to the last question yet, but the definite answer to the first two isn't no. It's hell no!

So the stage is set for today's press conference with Scott McLellan (derogatorily called "Puffy McMoonface by the less polite of us on the left end). Strangely, the press began behaving like a press ought to. When McClellan tried to dodge a good question, they called him on it. Finally David Gregory asked McClellan if he wasn't even going to stand behind the words he'd uttered at the same podium a year and a half ago. An electric moment, no doubt.

Suddenly McClellen has begun sounding as though he's going to break into a "depends on what the meaning of is is..." speech. Oh, it was rich.

Payback's a...what's the word I'm lookin' for? I think you know!

Actually though, this isn't payback. This is a press not taking a shit answer and moving on to the next question. The questions were valid and McClellan's avoidance of them didn't come across as having the investigation's well being as his first priority. He was doing everything he could to not say the right thing. And he was well aware that this could be a press moment that lives on and on, as one of his few notable points in front of the camera. He didn't want what fell out of his mouth to be the wrong thing.

Someone forgot to tell him that closing the barn door after the horse bolted doesn't do a lot of good. And that thread that someone started pulling on Mr. Rove's sweater? It won't be pushed back into it.

What, are you crazy? This is the United States of America! I cede my right to whatever opinion I want to hold, whatever words I care to utter, 'til death do we part.

Next you're gonna tell me OJ was innocent, that Michael Jackson's never touched a boy inappropriately.

No, Maddog. And I'd never ask the same of a free American (I'm tawkin' about you, senor). And in actuality, MY way is the American way. My opinion won't conflict with any laws being caried out. There's no need to confuse the realm of opinion, and the execution of laws.

I don't really get what hoops you want me to jump through. It sounds as though you're wanting me to agree to accepting Fitzgerald's investigation without so much as a whimper.

When you say "Taking him "to task", without a lawful judgement, as so many Democrats are wont to do today seems to be sadly inappropriate" I'm thinking that when you take someone to task a payment's being extracted from them. Newsflash: whatever I say means precisely o.oooo% to Karl Rove. He excercises more power before he takes a dump in the morning than I will in a month of Sundays.

From my vantage point, what you're saying is absolutely VACANT. You're acting as though Karl Rove is the victim and I'm treating him unfairly. Karl Rove could have me for an after dinner snack.

Your self-righteous meter is wildly out of calibration.

(point of order: I AM VTexan...not sure about the confusion on blogger)

Wilson: I've yet to see ANY substantive proof of any lies Wilson's said. For a very good compilation of the disinformation campaign the Republican party has waged against Wilson, go to www.mediamatters.org

The site highlights the disinformation not by reporting it, but by showing video clips of the attempts at disinformation, then giving verifiable sources to disprove that disinformation. This ain't a he said/she said thing. It's quite well done.

Regarding OJ, let's not forget: after OJ was acquitted in the criminal trial, he was (in essence) convicted of the same crime in the civil trial.

Regarding acceptance of the investigation results, my stance has changed not one iota. I will cede absolutely NONE of my rights of an American to think, to say, to do anything I want to, to you or anyone else. And I think it's really bizarre of you to keep throwing this gauntlet out as if it's yours to throw, and as if you have some moral authority to demand this.

I mean...what's the deal guy? This is a question I'd never even think to ask you. If the special prosecutor comes out with an indictment and wants to pursue criminal charges on several folks and that pisses you off, you've got a right to your anger and any manifestation of that anger. You're an American. That's a right we all have, and would be foolish to dismiss.

What part of that equation don't you understand? Why does it matter so much to you that I color only between the lines that YOU have laid out?

Perhaps this is an essential aspect to the conservative mind, I don't know. But it's good to remember that this is the land of the free, not the land of those free to think the thoughts you want them to. And I don't say that with rancor, it's just an attempt to underscore that this is not a seditious attitude, and it's nothing I have and you don't.

We aren't communicating too well here, I fear. Let me be explicit: I will accept whatever Fitzgerald's ruling is, insomuch as I won't in any way recommend insurrection, revolution, or murder because of any ruling he might make.

I will, as will most any American, "accept" his findings.

That doesn't mean I will necessarily agree with it. That doesn't mean I won't speak out against it if I feel justice wasn't served. That doesn't mean I'll surrender my right to have an opinion.

What, pray tell, is so difficult for you to understand about this? And what gives you the right to just shy of demand I accept his findings, regardless of what they are, without so much of a question? What breed of American are you that demands this?

Americans are known for a lot of things, one of which is their individuality, and their willingness to express their opinions. Why you want everyone to agree to join the lock-step march of blind acceptance is, and it seems you'll never understand this, downright bizarre.

I accept the premise that this is a nation of laws, which explains my first paragraph.

But there's this thing called the Constitution, which claims I have a right to free speech. And I ain't gonna tell anyone, Maddog from Houston Texas included, that I won't speak my mind about the ruling afterwards.

No, I'm not on board.

And regarding Wilson being a liar, seems that George HW Bush thought a lot of him. He called him an American hero for his work in Baghdad just before Desert Storm. So are you calling the former President a liar?

It's clear that you don't like hearing what you don't want to hear. None of us do; me included.

But that's the "tough luck" part of living in a free country.

I read a book: "Bush's Brain" that detailed Rove's career. It went into great detail about what an underhanded do-anything-to-win kind of guy he is. I don't like those kinds of people. They compromise the quality of our country.

And to think that the president's #1 advisor is a guy who has made a career out of not just being shrewd, but being deceptive and underhanded and dishonest...that rubs me the wrong way. Despite being what you may call a socialist, I think of myself as a proud American who believes in his country and the constitution and all it stands for. I see Karl Rove as NOT standing for those values.

In this war of values, he's the one without them.

Yeah, I think my mind already IS made up. Not so much about the details of this case, but as to the nature of his character. I've finally gotten to the point where I don't care if he's guilty of this particular crime, he's been guilty of a whole lot more that's come before, so this one will work for me.

I know that doesn't sound like justice to you, but you're looking at it as if justice operates in a vacuum--that justice is what it would seem to be. Let's not forget that those who built our law are those who live and breathe and profit from it. In other words if you make the rules of the game, you tend to slant those rules toward your side.

Actually, it's getting too late...I need to be in bed. Perhaps I'll explain another time.

Maddog--
You've been threatening to leave and not come back to this site for quite a number of months. That you might actually stick to your word is downright un-Republicanesque. I guess time will tell if you're a true Republican.
