Republican Target has a picture on it: Howard Dean

The current "let's laugh Dean out of office" campaign by Republicans is cynical beyond what one would expect, even from them.

In case you've been living in a cave the last few months, Howard Dean now runs the Democratic National Committee. He's not minced words when citing his distaste for the direction Republicans have guided ( and I use that term loosely) this country in the last several years. Because of that, he has raised the hackles of Republicans.

Or is it that simple?

Fundraising: Despite flawed comparisons by right-wingers, Dean's raised more money than any predecessor. Regrettably, that's one of the position's primary functions.

Public Relations: The Republicans would have you believe he's a walking talking disaster. Common sense will tell you that walking, talking disasters don't outpace all predecessors in fund-raising.

Here's what's really happening: Dean's determination and willingness to speak the truth--even if the Republicans scream like stuck pigs--plus his not backing away from his words, is exactly what we need. If he continues, Republicans will begin to see what many of us already know: Dean is what Democrats need to overcome 8 years' worth of namby-pamby Presidential candidates.

The Republicans realize that Dean's got the policy wonk intelligence of Clinton, but also an unwavering confidence in his beliefs. That combination makes him extremely dangerous to Republicans. So what do they do? They do this.Vice President Cheney goes on the attack. While you'd expect an attack, you'd at least expect an attack which wasn't provably stupid. I mean just s-t-u-p-i-d.

Cheney: "I've never been able to understand his appeal. Maybe his mother loved him, but I've never met anybody who does. He's never won anything, as best I can tell."

Besides the bizarre tactic of dragging Dean's mother into it, Dean was quite popular in Vermont, and his campaign attracted millions of Americans. And then there's the quote about Dean never having won anything. Perhaps it escaped Cheney's attention that Dean won five Gubenatorial races in Vermont. And then there's his winning of the chairmanship of the Democratic party, after his catastrophic defeat in the primaries. Most pundits thought his political career was dead and buried after that.

But then this idiotic statement about Dean follows: "That's not the kind of individual you want to have representing your political party."

Perhaps he would prefer someone running the party like...say Tom DeLay. Ol' Tom's been the subject of three ethics investigations. He exploited the Terry Schiavo case for political gain. He's taken junket after junket after junket on the tab of companies who stood to profit from legislation before the house.

In fact, Cheney probably would prefer someone like Tom DeLay to run the Democratic party. If he were corrupt he'd be a much easier target.

But while Dean is clearly the target of the Republican slime machine, he's not an easy one. Here's what he said in Iowa:

"We need to be blunt and clear about the things we're going to fight for. I'm tired of lying down in front of the Republican machine. We need to stand up for what we believe in."

Now that's how we're going to beat the Republicans. Standing up for our beliefs, and not backing down when the fecal matter starts flying.

The idea ISN'T to bring red-state conservatives to his cause. They're conservative. This is not a major stretch...

As to Dean being radical: name me ONE far left or radical program, law or platform position he's taken. You can't do it. I've made this challenge several times to people at TVspy, and no one's been able to meet it. How about you, Maddog? You got the chops?

As to him playing right into the right wing cause, it's amazing how many of you right-wingers find the time to complain about Dean if all he's doing is helping you. Methinks it doesn't add up. I think you folks know there's a danger in Dean.

Actually, no. YOU accused him of being OUT THERE. That means YOU have the proving to do, not me.

As to his being an idiot: He's a medical doctor and a 5-time re-elected Governor. He was also elected the head of the Governor's association.

You should feel foolish calling him an idiot. His resume makes yours--or mine--look ridiculous by comparison. Call him what you like, but you don't have a snowball's chance of making idiot stick. You'd have to be an idiot to believe otherwise.

Now, about that challenge: you gonna step forward and back up your claim, or not.

Further, if you can't back up your claim about Dean, you REALLY should wonder why it is that you are DEAD-ON SURE that he's a wacked-out liberal, when his record proves otherwise.

Maddog: the time for big talk has come and gone. The time is now to prove what you're claiming.

Maddog--
www.dictionary.com defines idiot as:
A foolish or stupid person.
A person of profound mental retardation having a mental age below three years...

Calling a medical doctor who was a 5-term governor, and serious political candidate for president an idiot is kind of on the weird side there, my canine friend. Can we agree that his particular politics, style and attitude are something you find offensive, rather than embarrassing yourself by calling him an idiot?

I have spent a couple of hours around him, as I directed TV shows that he was on. I can tell you that he was a force to be reckoned with, and the smartest person in the room.

I must say that if you find the idea of Dean possibly having become our president, but don't after 5 years of Bush find that a scary proposition, that's QUITE telling. Bush has gone out of his way to involve us in an amazingly depleting war. He's virtually ruined the American name in the world, and made the world a FAR less safe place for Americans.

And after all this, what gives you the willies is the DEAN SCREAM. Maddog, you can do better than this.

You use terms like far left and nut case about Dean, but can't ever back it up with any actual F-A-C-T-S. You just cite visceral feelings, or words Dean's spoken about the Republican leadership. If you don't perceive that people have legitimate gripes against the corrupt Bush leadership, then we really have nothing left to say. This is tantamount to me saying the sky is blue and you say it's green.

Your most telling line is "case closed in my mind" because that's it precisely. Your mind is closed.

You're quite right that we're NOT on the same page. And I honestly wish I could say you'll be missed here.

But the largest part of me knows that you've seen much of the same headlines and backstories and Americans' suffering and press conferences and campaigns and political maneuvering and the degenerating lower class...and you still have faith in the party that's gone a long way towards ruining this country, and hatred for the party that's trying to turn things around.

At what point does support of this horrible administration become the sign of a major character flaw? If not before, SURELY by now.

Adieu.

I am most adamantly NOT with you. The Republicans are misleading this country in a most unprecedented fashion.

Really, angrycanine, if that's not at least possible in your mind, we have no common ground.

Se la vie. Or as we say in the TV bidness, se la TV.

You're delusional. There isn't a Republican in the country who isn't cheering Dean on. This GROWN MAN actually said, "My view is that Fox News is a propaganda outlet for the Republican Party and I don't comment on Fox News.''

Ummm, didn't he just comment on Fox News? You should have seen the expression on his face. He looked like he was about to rip off all his clothes and start swinging from the chandeliers like a baboon.

How does a grown man logically (and sanely) believe that the number one cable news network in the world is the propaganda arm of a political party?

He was then led away by an expressionless Jesse Jackson who looked like he couldn't wait to get Dean into a private room where he could demand, "ARE YOU NUTS???" Even Jesse has his limits.

This just gets better and better.

Maddog, LoneRanger--
This is not your place to come. It's a free country; you can do so. But our beliefs are seemingly at polar opposites.

If your objective is to reach and/or convince a liberal to see something in another way, you're failing at it. If your objective is to call people names or deride me, then what that about your character is something that needs your attention, not my blog.

I don't know what you're aiming to do, but I do know that you've outlasted your welcome.

When you call me wacko and moonbat, there is NO communication going on.

As you know, I've engaged in meaningful dialogue with you in the past. But when you resort to name-calling, that's not communication. That's only an expression of anger.

I haven't earned your emnity, nor do I deserve to be on the receiving end of your anger. That's very rude of you, and uncalled for to boot.

It's convenient for you to classify it as me wanting no opposition. But that's not what's going on.

A sincere apology if I've ever gotten one. Thanks for that.

Your statement that almost everything the Dems have done of late really perturbs conservatives? I can say without pause that the same thing can be said from my philosophical standpoint, but about Republicans. Note I didn't use the word conservatives. I have FAR fewer beefs with conservatives than I do Republicans. Current-day Republican leadership has little to do with the honorable conservatives of the party's past.

I fear the gulf between our beliefs is too wide to bridge, but I appreciate and understand that the "good guys" are scattered amongst both sides.
